In Memoriam: Sweetie
Sweetie
Sweetie, one of the Valentines dogs, was a girl of extremes. When she felt well, she was a spirited, playful dog who would
hide behind the couch to jump out at the other dogs. She was loving, and possessive. If there was love to give, she
wanted to be the dog to get it; food, and she wanted to be the one to eat it. Sweetie quickly mastered the stairs
because that’s where her people went at night, and she liked nothing better than being with her foster family. But
when she felt bad, as she often did in the short two months she was with us, she could seldom find the strength to
even eat. But while she was carted back and forth to the vet; medicated, prodded and stuck with needles,
she never faltered in her devotion.
On April 17, 2004, Sweetie gave up her fight, losing her battle against a heartworm
infection. One of the several vets that treated Sweetie commented that she certainly had “traded up in life”, and
her foster parents were honored to have been her family at the end. We’ll see you at the bridge, sweet girl…
